  • Do I Need to Pigeon Proof My Solar Panels?

Do I Need to Pigeon Proof My Solar Panels?

Solar panels make a great addition to any Arizona home. After all, Arizona is the sunshine state. Hundreds of homeowners across the valley are making the change and installing solar panels. However, there’s an unforeseen side effect to getting solar panels installed, and it’s not a good one. Along with all the benefits solar panels provide homeowners, they also provide wonderful benefits for pigeons.

Solar panels provide excellent shade, shelter from rain, and protection from predators. They also provide an excellent view for identifying food and water sources. In other words, your solar panels are the perfect summer getaway for a flock of pigeons.

Once they have made their home, pigeons can grow quickly from a mild problem to an infestation. Which spells bad news for your roof and solar panels.

Pigeons come with all kinds of problems

Once pigeons have taken up residency under your solar panels, they bring along with themselves a slew of potential issues. Namely in the form of debris and droppings. Pigeons nests are made up of a chaotic assortment of twigs and sticks. Large buildup of debris underneath your solar panels and trap heat, hindering your panels efficiency. In extreme cases, more severe damage can occur.

Pigeon nests can prevent proper water shed, which can result in pooling water. Left unchecked, water can get underneath the protective roofing and cause long term damage to the roof.

While Pigeons love your solar panels, the feelings are not mutual. Solar panels require unhindered view of the sun for optimal power generation, and pigeons aren’t picky where they poop. While a dropping here or there won’t impact the efficiency of your solar panels, droppings from a large flock of birds can greatly hinder solar panel efficiency, and in some severe cases render it completely useless.

Not to mention that Pigeon poop is highly acidic and can be damaging to surfaces unless it is cleaned properly.

Your solar panels are an investment you need to protect

Solar panels are a major investment and improvement for a home and it’s important to keep them that way with proper bird proofing. If you’re experiencing a major pigeon infestation underneath your solar panels, contact Pigeon Pros. What if I don’t have a pigeon problem?

Even if you don’t have pigeons yet, it’s simply a matter of time. All it takes is one person in your area to pigeon proof their panels, and that flock will look for the next best option, YOUR HOUSE. Installing pigeon proofing measures on your solar panels before it becomes a problem will save you money on the installation, because there is no mess to clean up, and ensure you never experience pigeons interrupting your solar panel efficiency.

Pigeon Proof Your Solar Panels Now

If you’ve noticed pigeons visiting your home, or homes nearby, it’s time to take action. Preventing the problem from getting out of hand is cheaper, and a lot less messy than waiting till they become a real issue.

  • Find Out How Toxic Pigeon Poop Can Be

Find Out How Toxic Pigeon Poop Can Be

    Is Pigeon Poop Toxic?

The short answer is that yes, pigeon poop is toxic and full of diseases and fungi that can be harmful to humans. The good news is that cases of humans catching these diseases are few and far between.

That being said, while cases of humans getting sick from pigeon poop aren’t common, it’s important to understand how these droppings can get you sick, what happens if you get sick, and the best ways to prevent getting sick in the first place.

    Pigeon Poop Diseases

Pigeons are not known as the cleanest of birds. In fact their living conditions are downright disgusting. In one year the average pigeon produces 25 lbs. of droppings. Most of that pigeon poop is deposited in and around where they live. In fact, pigeons use their droppings to insulate and cement their nests together. As their nests grow, the buildup of feathers, droppings, and other deposits create a breeding ground for disease and fungi. Some of the more common fungal diseases found in pigeon poop are Histoplasmosis,  Cryptococcosis, and Psittacosis, to name a few.

These diseases aren’t transferable from pigeon to human through direct contact. Instead these diseases are transmitted by breathing in dust created when droppings are disturbed, which is why it’s important to use caution when dealing with large amounts of pigeon poop.

    Getting Sick

When individuals do get sick, the symptoms can include lung inflammation, cough, chest pain, fever, and fatigue. Rarely do these symptoms develop into something more. However, in infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, the effects of getting these diseases can be more severe. Always use care when dealing with pigeon droppings.

    Avoiding Infection

    Get Rid of Pigeon Poop
Pigeon & Bird abatement of solar panels on a flatroof by the Pigeonpros

The first, and most important step, for avoiding these diseases, is to prevent the buildup of large quantities of pigeon droppings in the first place. Don’t wait for pigeons to go from a minor problem to an infestation.

This is especially true for business owners, who are responsible for keeping their patrons healthy. When left unchecked, pigeon infestations can create huge health hazards, not to mention aesthetic eyesore, for businesses.

Take the time to investigate areas that might be infested with pigeons, and look into installing pigeon deterrents in areas where pigeons are roosting. In some cases, where the problem is minor, a home or business owner may take on the responsibility themselves.

When cleaning up pigeon droppings consider wearing gloves, a respirator/face mask, and use a hose or pressure washer to minimize the likelihood of inhaling the fungal spores.

If it’s too late for that and the pigeon poop buildup is severe, consider calling in professionals, such as Pigeon Pros, to take care of the problem. Pigeon Pros has been cleaning up and taking care of pigeon problems in Phoenix for 23 years. The staff are trained to safely remove and clean up pigeon poop to make the area safe for everyone.

  • Eliminate Your Pigeon Infestation

    Eliminate Your Pigeon Infestation

Chances are if you’ve lived in Phoenix for more than a week, you’ve noticed all the pigeons flying around. Arizona, Phoenix in particular, has a perfect environment for pigeons, lots of flat surfaces for roosting, and (mostly) beautiful temperatures year round. Pigeons love it here, and where they love, they live.

What you might now know is how quickly a flock of pigeons can grow. Pigeons have a fairly short reproduction cycle. While it takes humans nine months to grow a baby, and another eighteen years for that human to be mature, in some cases closer to twenty five years. Pigeons lay eggs less than two weeks after mating, and those eggs hatch in less than three weeks. Each brood is one to three eggs, and after six months, each of those pigeons are mature enough to begin mating.

Not only are pigeons’ reproductive cycles barely a month long, they usually give birth to 5-7 broods a year. Seeing how pigeons are community birds and live together in large flocks. A small pigeon problem (20 birds) can grow to an infestation (more than 200) in a single year. If not handled, a minor pigeon problem can escalate to a full blown infestation in no time.

Why Pigeon Infestations are Such a Problem

Like the flying rats they are, pigeons aren’t picky about where they make their homes. As long as the location meets a few basic requirements; somewhat flat and protected from the elements, pigeons will roost. Most homes and businesses in the valley meet the requirements to become a perfect pigeon home, which is why pigeon infestations are so prevalent in the Greater Phoenix Area.

These homes, or roosts, start out as a simple cluster of sticks and debris. Pigeons use the same nest over and over, with each additional use adding droppings, feathers, tidbits of food, and even baby pigeons that have died. In fact, pigeon droppings help cement and insulate the nest, providing increased protection from the elements. Over time, these nests grow larger in size and create more than just an eyesore for businesses and homes, but they are a breeding ground for diseases and can even block up gutters and vents.

Get Rid of the Pigeon Infestation

    Pigeon Infestation Phoenix

Pigeons can be very challenging to get rid of for several reasons. They are resilient, intelligent, and have a strong sense of home. Efforts to scare away pigeons with reflective light, fake predator birds, and other DIY hacks can work, though the effects are usually temporary. The pigeons fly off to another perch for a little while, wait a bit, then come right back. The homing instinct makes it so pigeons don’t want to leave the place they’ve decided to set up residence.

Not only do pigeons’ instincts keep them coming back, pigeons are quickly able to realize that scare tactics are not real threats to their safety. When they make the realization, these efforts become completely ineffective.

The way to ensure pigeons leave for good is to make the place they live inaccessible to them, pigeon proof. If they can’t get there, they’ll move off and find another place to roost. Some of the most effective pigeons proofing methods include pigeon spikes, pigeon wire, and pigeon netting. Once the area has been cleaned of pigeon nests and droppings, and the product has been installed correctly, pigeons will have no choice but to relocate to a more accessible area.

At Pigeon Pros we understand pigeon roosting habits and how to best install permanent pigeon proofing. Before you pull out the credit card, or DIY belt, to take care of your pigeon infestation, contact us and we’ll come out and give you a free estimate to take care of your pigeon infestation.
